There are so many people do so many heart warming acts which we don’t know about. It is not easy to do some kind acts spontaneously which has a long term effect. There are still so many people in this beautiful world and may be..just may be because of those persons humanity is still alive.
Today my dear friends..I will tell you about a fine human being who is not only a very famous basketball player but he is also a very generous person. He showed the kind of spontaneity and generosity everyone expects from everyone in a time of need and he did not even want anyone to know about that. Let me tell you the experience I had with this gem of a person.
His name is Chris Webber, the great basketball player who made Sacramento Kings a very famous basketball team in the year 2001 and onwards. He was a great basketball player who could carry the game on his shoulder. Please read www.chriswebber.com to read about him and his whereabouts.
9/11 is the worst day of mankind. On that day of 2001, few terrorists changed the world forever. The innocence of this world was forever changed. What did I do on that day ..? That will be another day to write but here I have to say what kind of experiences I had with this fine human being, Chris Webber.
On the day after the 9/11, the whole city was still in a shock..everyone was confused, no one was talking about anything..there was a clear somber mood on the whole city. I saw very few people were on the street, the kind of energy you would expect from New Yorkers was totally gone as if the whole city has gone 100 years back..there was almost no traffic, roads were empty but I still had to go to my work at General Nutritional Center which was on 57th Street and in between 5th and 6th Ave. I was the manager of that store so I had no other choice but opening the store. I was not feeling well as it seemed the whole life has extracted out of my body..there were very few customers were coming to buy anything. So about 11 in the morning, 3 young women came to my store and told me that the building manager’s office wanted to send energy bars and protein bars to the ground zero rescue workers. So I told my stock guys to get all the bars and bring back to the front of the store. There were more than 350 boxes of the bars I had in the store and the total price was about $8800 dollars. The girls had about $6000 dollars and told me to wait for few minutes and they went to get the rest of the money from the office manager. So there were mountains of boxes full of energy bars and protein bars on the floor. While I was busy calculating the money and organizing the boxes of the bars, my stock guy came to me and told me that there was a very tall black man in the store and my stock guy was so surprised to see such a tall guy that it was really a treat for him.
So when that guy was coming towards me I immediately recognize him as Chris Webber, the great player from Sacramento Kings. I was very surprised to see him in my store. He was trying to buy a health drink which he got it from the refrigerator. When he was paying for it he saw all those boxes of bars and asked me what are those for..I told him,” The building manager’s office is buying those bars for the rescue workers in the World Trade Center. But they were short of money so they went to get the rest of the money.” That’s when it happened..Chris Webber told me by giving me his American Express Platinum Card,” Charge the whole amount in my cards.” I was surprised and asked him,” Are you sure ..? It is about $9000 dollars.” He said with a smile,” Please charge the amount in my credit card and please don’t tell them about me.” So I charged the whole money to his credit card and he thanked me and walked away from the store.
The girls came back with the money and I told them that someone already paid for the bars. They almost had a heart attack and screamed to know who he was but I told them that he made me promised not to tell you that. They could not believe their eyes that someone could pay and did not wait to be thanked. Anyway they told me to order the same number of boxes again and send it directly to the ground zero. Since I did not have any more boxes to sell, I ordered the bars and told the wholesale company to send the bars directly.
There you go my friends. If Mr. Chris Webber ever read this blog, I would say to him, ” Mr. Chris, I am sorry that I could not keep the story inside me..and I had to tell my friends. You are a gem of a man and you have a heart of gold. You showed your empathy by proving that ..a friend in need a friend indeed. And you are a true friend of humanity.”
Thanks for reading this my friends.
